Choosing between Revolut, Wise and N26 is the most common question landing in our reader inbox — beating "which neobank" by a 3:1 ratio. So in January 2025 we picked the three apps apart with one job: figure out which is actually the cheapest, fastest and most reliable way to move money in and out of Europe today.
To make this concrete, we moved €27,000 across the three apps over four weeks: €9,000 each, split between EUR-to-EUR SEPA, EUR-to-GBP, EUR-to-USD and EUR-to-RON transfers. We logged the spread against the Reuters mid-market rate, the arrival time, and three customer-support tickets per provider.
The methodology, in one paragraph
Every transfer was initiated on the app's free/standard tier from a verified personal account. We compared against the live mid-market rate at the moment of submission, recorded the exact amount delivered, and timestamped arrival on the receiving account. No referral codes, no promo months. Test dates: January 8–February 7, 2025.
1. Cost: who's really the cheapest in 2025?
The headline finding will not surprise long-time Wise users. On declared FX transfers, Wise consistently delivered the lowest all-in cost — an average effective spread of 0.41% across our 12 non-EUR transfers. Revolut was second at 0.84% on weekday transfers, climbing to 1.32% on weekends due to its weekend markup. N26 sat at 0.86% (it routes FX through Wise under the hood).
"For €9,000 moved EUR to GBP, the difference between Wise and weekend Revolut was €81.90 — for a single transfer."
2. Speed: SEPA Instant changed everything
For EUR-to-EUR transfers within the SEPA Instant network, all three apps arrived in under 12 seconds. For EUR-to-GBP, Wise won on median speed (14 minutes), Revolut took 38 minutes on average, N26 averaged 51 minutes. Outliers existed in all three providers, especially over weekends.
For EUR-to-USD, all three offered same-day arrival to most US banks during the test window. None matched the marketing promise of "seconds" — typical arrival was 90 minutes to 6 hours.
3. Customer support: the most surprising result
This is where the rankings flipped. Wise's in-app chat resolved our three test tickets in a median 2 hours and 11 minutes. Revolut's free-tier chat took a median 4 hours 8 minutes — escalating one ticket to email took another 26 hours. N26's standard tier was the slowest at 18 hours median.
4. Features beyond transfers
- Revolut wins on lifestyle add-ons: travel insurance, lounge access, vaults, joint accounts, crypto and stocks.
- Wise wins on multi-currency holding (60+ currencies) and business invoicing for freelancers.
- N26 wins on budget categorisation, sub-account organisation and the "Spaces" UX.
5. Reliability: a tie, but with caveats
None of the three apps suffered material outages during our test window. Historically Revolut has had more publicly visible incidents (most recently a partial card outage in November 2024), while Wise has been quieter. We don't think reliability is a deciding factor among the three in 2025.
The verdict
If you only pick one app: Wise remains the most honest payment app for international transfers in 2025. The FX cost advantage compounds quickly, the support actually answers, and the multi-currency model still suits freelancers and remote workers better than anything else on the market.
If you do most of your spending in EUR and want lifestyle features alongside payments: Revolut Standard with weekday-only FX remains the right pick. Avoid the weekend markup, use it as your debit card, send international transfers via Wise.
If you want one clean banking app to centralise everything in EUR: N26 Standard for the budget UX, layered with Wise when you transact outside the eurozone.
